It is impossible to overemphasize how Technology has transformed society through improved connectivity, financial inclusion, and accessibility to trade and services, among other things.

By doing a simple Google search, you may find all the necessary information and skills needed.

However, a lot of communities are still in the dark, which is why 25-year-old Sebastian Sanders, also known as “The Youth Principal,” a well-known community impact speaker, and the founder of Sanders Hand International, a nonprofit, is utilizing his expertise to make a difference around the world.

Sebastian is a multifaceted Social Entrepreneur that thrives on bringing about change in our society and economy.

With over 3,000 students and parents served from Texas to Oklahoma, Sanders Hand International has been transforming the lives of countless families and students around the globe.

In a bid to bridge the technological skills advancement gap in Ghana, Sebastian and his team set up an E-Learning Center to provide training for students on education and digital business programs.

Sebastian is the first African American NGO Executive Director, to establish education & literacy programs in another country with the founding of Sanders Hand Ghana.

In an Exclusive Interview with the Ghanaian American Journal (GAJ), “The Youth Principal” shed further light on the need for digital skills.

GAJ: How was the Nonprofit Organisation, Sanders Hand Ghana birthed and what inspired its establishment?

The Sanders Hand Ghana was birthed in 2021 after a zoom meeting with Ghana Executive leadership Emmanuel, who oversees the program.

Initially, it was a partnership for the Annual Sanders Spelling Bee in Ghana, Africa but after the event and our winners were selected to meet with our United States team we noticed the technology gap.

Our Ghana team visited each of the winners’ homes personally and it inspired us to close the gap by establishing a center of technology for students to have access to and learn software skills.

GAJ: What is your opinion about the education system in Ghana?

“The education in Ghana is similar to the United States, where you have some intelligent students who will change the world.

The only issue is the lack of representation from leadership for students to feel inspired and cared for as well as the technology gap in different communities that can cause students to fall behind due to a lack of resources.”

GAJ: What are the plans for the organization (Sanders Hand Ghana)?

“The future of education is rooted in technology and financial literacy. We plan to create a study abroad project for leaders across the world to visit Ghana, Africa, and work with our learning centers volunteering, teaching courses & experiencing Ghana” He revealed.

He also advised young people to expose themselves to “all opportunities that will tap into their innovative self while defining their personal success.”

In addition to Sanders Hand, Sebastian is the founder & chairman of SJS Enterprises, serving as the cultivation of community & business.

Sebastian is a host & creator of the Money Mondays network show an edutainment division of SJS Enterprises With his expertise in nonprofit consulting & nonprofit coaching.

He is also a published bestselling author of the “Art of Giving” series with the first release in 2020, One Nonprofit Can Change The World, the complete business inspirational guide to founding your nonprofit organization.

Born in Houston Texas, Sebastian is a graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio with a bachelor’s degree in business administration management.

In his professional career, he has worked for Pepsico as a Sales District Manager & Frito Lay as a Supply Chain Network Manager for one of the largest production plants in the country.

The business genius and his team hope to establish more financial learning centers throughout Ghana to help provide jobs in local communities.

“Within 5 years we plan to be the number one source for education & career development for Ghana, African students & parents” He added.

EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network of over 430 international student advising centers in more than 175 countries and territories. The two Centers in Ghana are located in Kumasi (ACE Consult in Asokwa) and at the U.S. Embassy in Accra.

EducationUSA Centers promote U.S. higher education to students by offering accurate, comprehensive, and current information about opportunities to study at accredited post-secondary institutions in the United States.

EducationUSA also provides services to the U.S. higher education community to help institutional leaders meet their recruitment and campus internationalization goals. EducationUSA is your official source on U.S. higher education.

EducationUSA

The 2021 Open Doors Report on international education showed 4,229 Ghanaians studied at colleges and universities in the United States, a slight increase over last year. This retains Ghana in second place in Sub-Saharan Africa. The number one spot is held by Nigeria, with 12,860 students.

The EdUSA services in Accra are free of charge and accessible virtually. We do not endorse or rank any particular college or university but represent all accredited US universities and colleges. We also do not endorse any education agency or consultancy (such as in the areas of test preparation, admissions, placement, language training, and visas).

Britain will offer work visas to graduates from the world’s best universities in an expansion of its post-Brexit immigration system that is designed to attract the “best and brightest” workers. But no African universities are included in the list of eligible institutions.

Under the scheme , graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree from the top 50 universities abroad can apply for a two-year work visa and will be allowed to bring family members with them.

Those who receive doctorates can apply for a three-year visa. Successful applicants will then be able to switch to longer-term employment visas, the government said.

Eligible universities must appear in the top 50 rankings of at least two of the following: the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the Academic Ranking of World Universities and the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings. Those rankings must be for the year of the applicant’s graduation, which must be within the past five years.
The most recent list of eligible universities from 2021, published online by the UK government, comprises more than two dozen US universities, as well as institutions in Canada, Japan, Germany, China, Singapore, France and Sweden.

No African university is on the latest eligibility list, nor on lists for previous years. The decision to exclude graduates from African universities has been criticized.

“To exclude an entire continent brimming over with the enormous creative and intellectual energies of its youth on the basis of its absence from arbitrary, culturally biased, abuse-prone university rankings is shortsighted….

Several unranked African universities have produced, and continue to produce, some of the brightest minds in the world.” said Professor Farooq Kperogi of the Kennesaw State University, Georgia.

England footballer Marcus Rashford has won book of the year at the British Book Awards for his non-fiction debut.

You Are A Champion, which is intended to inspire young people, was chosen from the 12 individual category winners during the ceremony.

Rashford was named the winner at the event – nicknamed The Nibbies – at Grosvenor House in London.

Other winners included Marian Keyes, Sir Billy Connolly, Sir Paul McCartney, and Sathnam Sanghera.

Rashford’s book, written with journalist Carl Anka, offers advice on how to achieve your potential and find success.

In a pre-recorded message, Rashford said: “Every child should pick up the book and believe that I wrote it for them.

“I want to give a huge thanks to [publisher] MacMillan for believing in me and believing in the process, and a big thanks to Carl as well because he played a massive role in the book being completed. Without him, it wouldn’t have been able to run so smoothly.

“The reason I made the book and the purpose of the book was to give kids the opportunity that I never had but as I got older it is something that is really important.

He continued: “I think the way that the book has been perceived and the reception it has got and the actual words that I have heard from a lot of the kids – they have taken different stuff from the book, which is what I intended to do.

“I am really happy with it and hopefully it shows that if we can get books in the hands of children, it allows them to dream and believe in whatever they want to achieve in life.”

The book held off competition from The Lyrics by Sir Paul McCartney, which was the winner in the non-fiction lifestyle category, and Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason, which won the fiction prize.

The work was praised by a panel of judges that included broadcaster Gabby Logan, associate editor of books for The Observer New Review, Lisa O’Kelly, and Nigerian-born short story and novel writer Irenosen Okojie.

Logan said: “Marcus Rashford wanted a book to inspire a generation of kids who are often hard to reach and for whom books might not have been a big part of their childhood. He and his publisher have succeeded spectacularly.

“The campaign to get his book into the right young hands was focused and brilliant, and sales of over 200,000 copies are testament to this. The messaging of You Are A Champion is wholesome and positive and another brilliant example of the legacy that Marcus Rashford is sure to leave behind when his playing days are long gone.”

Also at the ceremony, comedian Sir Billy Connolly was named the winner of non-fiction audiobook of the year for the recording of his memoir, Windswept & Interesting.

Irish writer Marian Keyes took home the prize for author of the year, with organisers noting her “expert storytelling, incredible warmth of heart, and significant contributions to the publishing industry over three decades of writing”.

Elsewhere, Dapo Adeola was named illustrator of the year for his “empowering impact on the book world, working tirelessly to represent black communities while demystifying the industry for aspiring illustrators”.

Empire and: How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain by journalist and author Sathnam Sanghera was awarded the non-fiction narrative book of the year prize.

Thirty-two young Ghanaians have been selected as U.S. Department of State 2022 Mandela Washington Fellows.

The select groups are leaders in their professions and communities and were recruited from a candidate pool of nearly 4,000 Ghanaian applicants through a rigorous, competitive process.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

The 2022 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, based on universities’ contributions towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has ranked Ashesi first in Ghana.

Ashesi was also ranked seventh in Africa and among the world’s top 300 most impactful universities.

The Impact Rankings which started in 2019 are based on more than 100 metrics and over 200 measurements covering teaching, research, and community outreach; and highlight how universities are moving the world towards the achievement of the 17 SDGs.

Out of 1,524 institutions worldwide, 80 universities from 10 African nations are listed in the 2022 Impact Rankings, demonstrating the growing importance of the SDGs inside African higher education institutions.

The only Ghanaian universities in the top 10 are Ashesi University and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which are placed second and eighth respectively in Ghana and Africa.

The two are also the only Ghanaian universities in the world’s top 300.

Other Ghanaian universities accepted to the 2022 list, in order of ranking, were the University of Ghana, University of Health and Allied Sciences, University of Professional Studies, Accra, and Academic City University College.

Based on the University’s strong focus on social progress, giving access to students from all backgrounds, and advancing students up the income ladder, Ashesi achieved the highest ratings in contributions to the SDG 1 Goal of No Poverty.

Ashesi also received strong ratings in contributions to SDG 4 (Gender Equality), SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

“As the Impact Rankings focus on social and economic impact through universities’ contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, we can recognize niche strengths and uncover real pockets of excellence across the African continent,” said Chief Knowledge Officer at THE World University Rankings, Phil Baty, in a briefing for University World News.

A new children’s book from Abigail Osei introduces families to the Twi alphabet. The book is filled with beautiful illustrations that remind you of your childhood.

Abigail Osei, a Ghanaian philanthropy professional and author living in New York City, has announced the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for Let’s Learn Twi: Alphabet (Ma Yɛnsua Twi). The beautifully illustrated children’s book is aimed at families with young children and tourists alike. It is a gentle introduction to the Twi alphabet. The campaign will run until April 14th, when orders will be sent to the printer.

The new book aims to support families as they teach their children Twi. The book’s goal is to help stop the erosion of the Twi language in the diaspora. As more generations of Ghanaians are born outside of Ghana, fewer children retain the language, customs, and traditions. Without support, the cultural gap between Ghanaians in the diaspora and those in Ghana will continue to widen. Language is only the first step in Abigail’s vision. With a successful campaign, she will continue to expand not only into the language, but also Ghanaian customs and traditions.

Twi Alphabet book

Born in Atibie, Ghana, Abigail has spent most of her life in New York City. Although she has been out of Ghana for a long time, the love of the language, culture, and traditions has never left her heart. So, when she noticed that the children in their North American Ghanaian community were not learning Twi, she decided to do something about it. Let’s Learn Twi is the first of what she hopes to be a line of culture materials that will support families in the diaspora.

He took Mathematics students through a session at the University of Bangui assuring the press that he will do all it takes to ensure that he is present to tech at least once a week.

A report alwihdainfo.com showed the president interacting with his students in a class. It cites one of the students as saying he was proud to have the president as a lecturer.

Prior to entering politics, he had a long career as an academic becoming assistant lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Bangui in 1987 and vice-dean of the science faculty from 1989 to 1992.

For nearly a year Ahaspora Professionals Network, along with partners Diaspora Drive and GHPAC have been diligently preparing and planning for the Ghana Action Forum 2021, a conference themed “building bridges between home and abroad for Ghana’s development. The Forum, scheduled for December 29 and 30, 2021 was intentionally curated around relevant topics and dynamic speakers to spark discussions and develop actions to promote Ghana’s Development.

We reached out to several organizations and individuals and received massive support through a variety of sponsorships, and have put together a stellar line up of speakers. We are down to the last week and very ready to provide a spectacular event.

However, with the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Ghana, and after consultations with several of our stakeholders, some of whom have been infected, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Ghana Action Forum 2021. While we are disappointed and know you will be too, our health and well-being are paramount, and as such we believe this is the right decision.

Please note that this is a postponement, not a cancelation. We will be back with a new date as soon as we are confident that we can organize our celebrations in a safe manner. We appreciate your confidence in us while we strategically plan ahead. Thank you very much for your support and we look forward to celebrating with you very soon.

Ruby Yayra Goka (born 15 May 1982, Accra) is a Ghanaian dentist and author. She has 15 books to her credit and is best known for being a multiple Burt Award for African Literature winner in Ghana. Goka, who is an alumnus of the University of Ghana Dental School, currently heads the Dental Department of the Volta Regional Hospital, Ho.

Born in Accra, Ghana, Goka was born to Simon Yao Goka, a retired diplomat, and Lydia Aku Goka, a stay-at-home-mother.
When Ruby was two years old, her family moved to Ethiopia where she attended the Peter Pan International School.
Ruby Yayra Goka has always loved stories and storytelling. As a child, the only person who ‘benefitted’ from her great love of writing and storytelling was her younger brother, Eli.

Each day after school, he was made to watch a performance of a story Ruby made up. The cast of characters were usually her dolls, stuffed animals, and her cat, Katie. Thankfully for Eli, as Ruby got older she preferred reading to putting up productions. This preference often led to conflict with her older sister, Dela, because Ruby would hoard Dela’s literature books when Dela needed them to study. This love of reading and telling stories was what led her into writing many years later.

Ruby Yayra Goka
Her first published book for young adults, The Mystery of the Haunted House, won third prize in the Burt Award for African Literature competition in 2010.

The Burt Award for African Literature is an award that recognizes excellence in African writing for young adults. A year later she published two more books, Disfigured and In the Middle of Nowhere. Her books for young adults, The Lost Royal Treasure, When The Shackles Fall, Perfectly Imperfect, Plain Yellow, The Step-monster, and To Kiss a Girl, have all won awards in the Burt Award for African Literature competition from the year 2011 to the year 2018.

“Those Who Wait” was given an honorable mention in the same competition in the year 2012.
Her other books for children include A Gift for Fafa, Tani’s Wish, and Mama’s Amazing Cover Cloth.
Tani’s Wish was written for the Ghana Cleft Foundation to create awareness about cleft lips and palates and to reduce the stigmatization associated with the condition. Mama’s Amazing Cover Cloth won the 2019 Efua Sutherland Children’s Prize and has been nominated as both a CABA 2019 Honour book and an IBBY 2020 Honour book.

Ruby believes that the more African children see themselves reflected in the pages of books they read, the more they will dream and know they can be anything they want to be. When she isn’t spending time with her two dogs and turtle, Ruby will be found either reading, gardening, or holding conversations with her “imaginary friends.”
